Join us on this full day trip that will take you from our offices at the base of the tree laden Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Taos to the tall desert sandstone cliffs at the heart of Georgia O’Keefe country, near Abiquiu. After a beautiful float, splashy rapids and riverside lunch, end the day with a rejuvenating soak at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa followed by a short 25 minute drive back to Taos along the the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. and aim to have the group back in Taos around 5:00.
Admission to the hot springs is included in your reservation. You can read about Ojo Caliente’s admission costs here.
About The Float
The Rio Chama in Northern New Mexico is America’s Newest Wild and Scenic River. This 8 mile stretch begins beneath a secluded Benedictine Abbey and ends just above Abiquiu Reservoir, where this silty desert river rolls to a halt among the rainbow cliffs of this remote four-corners location.
We meet at 8:00 AM at our boathouse on the north side of Taos. After a 1 hour drive to Abiquiu, where we will potentially meet other guests and you may purchase some last minute items if desired, we will head towards the river and drive along multi-hued sandstone cliffs to our launch point near the Christ in the Desert Monastery. During our float we will encounter several small but lively rapids (Class II) and beautiful calm desert meanders as we travel downstream to our takeout at Big Eddy, shortly above Abiquiu Lake. Half way through the float we will stop for a fresh and tasty riverside deli-style lunch.
