When Far Flung Adventures pioneered the idea of the River Music Trip in the 1980’s Butch Hancock was one of the original headliners. This world renowned Texas native and long standing staple of the Austin music scene is about as pleasant a river companion as one can find, especially when he brings his guitar along for beautiful campfire serenades and hilarious anecdotes.
A world traveling troubadour with a long string of recorded songs and albums, Butch Hancock has been called “one of the finest songwriters of our time” and is acknowledged by his peers and critics alike as one of the premiere singer-songwriters Texas has ever produced. His tunes evoke mystical visions of wind-swept dry-plains and his lyrics are profoundly imaginative, often displaying for his listeners the miracles that occur in the ordinary through creative irony and metaphors. His lyrical style has often been compared to that of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and his songs have been covered by the likes of Emmylou Harris.
Hancock is also a member of renowned country rock super-group, The Flatlanders, along with his lifelong friends, Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, a band they formed in 1972. During his acclaimed career, Hancock has written and recorded several landmark albums, some of them sparse and simple, others as big as the West Texas sky.
Day 1: Meet in beautiful Moab, Utah at 9am, where where guides will help with any last minute necessities and give you dry bags to pack your personal belongings into. From there, we will load up and take a scenic 1 hr drive to our put in at Ruby Ranch boat launch. Ponder the vastness of the Utah desert and the surrounding towers and mazes of Canyonlands country. Once we launch we will enjoy a mellow float down to camp and our first night of fireside music beneath starry desert skies!
Day 2-4: Following days will take us deep into the Canyonlands country and wilds of Labyrinth Canyon. Enjoy gourmet camp cuisine, canyon side hikes, a potential “up and over” at the famous Bowknot Bend, and nights spent on wide comfortable beaches with the company of friends and acoustic entertainment!
Day 5: Day 5 will bring us to our takeout point at Mineral Bottom boat ramp. Once we are off the river we will take a very scenic (and exciting) drive up Mineral Bottom road, through Dead Horse state park and back to Moab. The shuttle back to your vehicles will take about 1 hr.
Get ready to pitch a tent, sling a hammock, throw down a pad, and relax! Every day we will prepare and serve you a delicious riverside lunch, not limited to, but often including an array of home-roasted sandwich meats and homemade dips and salsas (see some of our recipes here). In addition, our camp dinners and breakfasts are a classic staple of the Far Flung experience, as 45 years in business has not only taught us the principles of reading white-water…but also of cooking and camp ambiance!
