Sample Itinerary

On this trip we partner up with the old cowhands of Rio Grande Stables for the full day adventure of a lifetime! Ride and lunch beside the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge and visit the pristine canyonscape and Class III rapids of the Middle Box. This trip is a Far Flung exclusive!

Start the day with a two-hour guided horseback ride along the rim of the Red River Canyon to its confluence with the Rio Grande Gorge, where you will meet your raft guides, who will have a fresh and homemade lunch prepared for you. While you enjoy your meal the guides will pack the rafting equipment onto horses and mules to prepare for the mile long descent from the canyons rim to the river’s edge. Once on the water you will have the opportunity to visit the pristine canyonscape of the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument, explore ancient Native American hunting sites, and keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife beneath the towering ponderosa pines.

We will meet at 8 a.m. at the Far Flung Adventures office and boathouse, where we will then shuttle you to the Rio Grande Stables office and you will meet your horseback guides and get acquainted with your horses!

A beautiful two hour horseback ride will take you beneath pines and junipers while you traverse along the rim of the Red River canyon to its confluence with the Rio Grande. Around 11:30 you will meet back up with us at the rim of the gorge for a delicious homemade lunch.

We will then load up our rafting gear on horses and take about a 45 minute downhill hike on a relatively maintained trail to the river’s edge, where we will prepare the boats, give you a safety orientation, and then launch for our gorgeous 9 mile wilderness float trip through the Middle Box.

We will arrive back at Far Flung Office and your vehicles approximately 5 p.m, though depending on water levels it could be as early as 3 p.m.
